El Salvador's President Claims No Civilian Deaths in Gang War

The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, affirmed this Monday that during the so-called 'war against gangs', implemented under a state of emergency since March 2022, no civilian died, and he maintained that 'God guided' the security strategy applied by his Government. Bukele made these statements during his participation in the National Prayer Breakfast for El Salvador, an event organized by the Próspera Foundation, an entity composed of US senators and congressmen, in which authorities from the three branches of state, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and religious leaders also participated. According to official information from the Presidency, this first meeting was conceived as a space for leaders from different sectors to meet to pray for the nation, promote national unity, and reinforce alliances based on faith, values, and the shared hope of a better future for El Salvador. The head of state has repeatedly defended the results of the security plan promoted under the state of exception, one of the main banners of his administration in the fight against gangs and crime.
