Salvadoran Court Revokes Detention of Former Police Director

An appeals court in El Salvador has revoked the pre-trial detention of former National Police director Javier Fanuco, who was accused of unjustified enrichment. Fanuco will now be under house arrest.

According to the Public Ministry, the investigations began after a report from the Comptroller General's Office, which indicated that Fanuco had not been able to justify approximately $496,000 in his accounts. They also denounce that the Comptroller's report was closed and sent to the Public Ministry without their consent, but that they could justify said amount at any time. The Court of Appeals decided to revoke the provisional detention measure that had been imposed weeks ago on retired Commissioner Javier Fanuco, former director of operations for the National Transit Police. Fanuco faces an investigation for unjustified enrichment, related to the period 2014-2018. As of today, Fanuco will be under house arrest. Fanuco's defense ensures that it had already presented documents to justify more than one million dollars and that the pending amount of $496,000 had not been completed due to banking procedures and bureaucratic times. This decision comes after the appeal presented by the defense of the former official, which had questioned the provisional detention decreed by a guarantees judge.
