Salvadoran activists protest health system layoffs

Twenty activists in El Salvador staged a protest on Saturday against the “arbitrary layoffs” of staff in the government health system. The demonstration began with demands to halt mass dismissals and to establish transparent dialogue with authorities. Hector Rodriguez, head of the Fired Workers Movement, warned that 11,200 positions were already cut in 2025 and that the total number of complaints now exceeds 22,000. He added that more than 500 union members have been dismissed and that new hiring terms are precarious. The Union of National Workers’ Defense joined a “Cacerolazo for another Black Christmas” call for dialogue to preserve the health system.
