In El Salvador, former police officer and serial killer Hugo Ernesto Osorio Chávez, known as "the psychopath of Chalchuapa," was convicted of killing at least 18 people. He lured his victims, mostly women, through social networks, offering them jobs or help migrating to the United States. When they arrived at his home, they were subjected to violence, sexual assault, and murder. The last two victims were a 57-year-old woman and her 26-year-old daughter. The screams of the younger victim, Jackeline Cristina Palomo, alerted neighbors, but she could not be saved, nor could her mother, Mirna Cruz Lima. Osorio Chávez also killed the victim's son, 24-year-old Alexis Palomo Lima, and another man. On May 7, 2021, police arrested the killer, who confessed to his crimes. Later, he led them to a site where 14 more bodies were found, bringing the total to 18. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele confirmed that four bodies were found on the property. According to Justice Minister Gustavo Villatoro, 14 bodies were exhumed from a pit on the property. Investigators described Osorio as a "sexual psychopath" or even a "serial killer" who "hunted" his victims on social media by offering jobs or migration assistance. Some reports suggest the victim count could be as high as 40, with at least ten accomplices of the killer arrested on charges related to human trafficking. Osorio Chávez, detained in the maximum-security prison "Zacatraz," provided information that helped solve the case, hoping for leniency.
